The Service

The National EMS Memorial Service

The National EMS Memorial Service is held each year to honor the men and women of America’s Emergency Medical Services who have given their lives in the line-of-duty.

During the ceremony, family members, friends, coworkers, political leaders, and EMS colleagues from around the nation come together to remember and honor those who have made the supreme sacrifice.

Honor guards, pipers, and drummers also come from across the nation to participate in this most memorable event.

Seating for family members begins approximately one hour before the start of the Service. As they arrive, they are greeted by EMS honor guards “standing post” at the entrances.

The Service begins with a prayer and is then followed by a powerful Presentation of Colors by the Honor Guards and Pipes and Drums Corps. In addition to the U.S. Flag, the flag from the state of each honoree is also presented and then posted on stage.

Roll Call of Honorees

After appropriate welcoming and remarks by NEMSMS board members and special guests, the Roll Call of Honorees begins.

As each honoree’s name is called, his/her picture is displayed on large screens above the stage, and family members go forward to receive three items in his/her honor:

• A U.S. flag that has flown over the Nation’s Capitol — denoting the honoree’s service to the country.
• A white rose — representing the honoree’s undying love.
• A medallion — signifying the eternal memory of the honoree.

National Moment of Silence

Following the Roll call and a video tribute, a National Moment of Silence is held.

Attendees, along with EMS agencies around the country, pause and observe a moment of silence in honor and remembrance of all EMS providers who have given their lives in the line-of-duty.

Live-Streamed

The entire service is live-streamed so EMS providers and appreciative citizens across America can be ‘present’ as the nation officially pauses in honor of those who have selflessly given so much for the health and well-being of so many.

Live-streaming information will be posted on this site in advance of the Service.
