Biography
Randy Capps had worked for CareLine for over two years. It was more than a job for Randy, it was a way of life. He was an active member of the volunteer fire service and spent much of his spare time talking to Jasper and Parrish school students about the opportunities available for them in EMS. Randy was also a CPR and First Aid instructor.

All that ended at 7:30 a.m. on December 19, 1996 when the CareLine ambulance he was driving was struck by a train at a railroad crossing. How the crash occurred remains unclear, although that same crossing in the Jones Village area had been the site of at least four other fatalities. What remains sadly clear is that EMT Randy Capps, 24, and his partner, paramedic Charles Edwards, 27, were both pronounced dead at Walker Baptist Medical Hospital shortly after the collision.

There was no patient aboard the ambulance at the time of the accident. Randy and Charles had been escorting another CareLine ambulance with a patient to the hospital. The first ambulance crossed the tracks in safety. The two-crew members on the 75-car train were not hurt; the locomotive was only slightly damaged.

Christmas 1996 is a bittersweet memory to Kim, Josh and Brandy Capps, Randy's wife and children.

Honored 1997
