Biography
The call came in to the Newington Fire Dept. November 11, 1971 for an ambulance and rescue crew to come to the aid of an injured man at the Cash and Carry Lumber Center. Lawrence Volz was one of four rescue workers to respond to the call. Lawrence was familiar with life saving techniques...he had been serving the community of Newington as a member of the Fire Department for over ten years.

The injured man was placed on board the ambulance and Mr. Volz took his position as driver to transport the patient to the Portsmouth Hospital. No one was prepared for what happened next. Lawrence Volz lost control of the ambulance and crashed into a tree on South Street after he was stricken at the wheel.

Mr. Volz was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital. The patient that Lawrence was transporting died in the hospital later that afternoon. The three ambulance attendants were injured, but were soon reported in "satisfactory" condition.

Lawrence Volz was a World War II Army veteran, a member of the Board of Fire Engineers, and a member of the Portsmouth Kiwanis Club. He had also served as a former member of the Newington Planning Board and was a former selectman. Lawrence Volz was 48.

Honored 1997
