Biography
The Craigsville community lost one of its most beloved citizens when Gump Shiflett collapsed after returning to the Craigsville-Augusta Springs Rescue Squad building on July 30, 1995.

Love of community led Camp to be a member of the Craigsville-Augusta Springs Rescue Squad for the past five years and a longtime member of the Craigsville Volunteer Fire Department where he was an emergency vehicle operator course-certified vehicle driver for both organizations. He was also certified in CPR.

Gump's selfless nature was well known in Craigsville as were his love of coffee and bingo."Gump was the kind of guy that never met a stranger. Everybody in the community knew him and loved him. It always amazed me that he could answer a 3:00 a.m. call and look like he just got out of church," said fellow squad member Richard Fox."I don't know how he could fit everything into a day. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather as well as a tireless worker who would bend over backwards to help anyone."

Gump's greatest joys were his wife of 45 years, Elsie, his daughter, Della Deans who preceded him in death on September 2, 1991, his granddaughter, Jennifer Peters and his great-grandson, Kyle. Also surviving are three brothers, three sisters and his son-in-law Jerry G. Deans.

Honored 1998
