Biography
"They are taught to be ready for anything, prepared for everything, surprised by nothing. They are special people, they understand the risks, and they face their challenges with grace, speed, and confidence. David was committed to being one of the best, he was one of the most professional skilled paramedics I had ever known. I was proud to call him my best friend," stated Eric Boystak.

David S. Bacon, Jr., 31, was killed on July 13, 2004 when the helicopter he was riding clipped trees on take-off and fell to the ground in a burning heap. The team had retrieved an injured patient from a highway accident, and was en route to Spartanburg Trauma Center in South Carolina. All aboard the flight, including the patient, were killed.

Flight paramedic Bacon worked for Regional One Air Medical Service operated by Spartanburg Healthcare System. He served Savannah and Chatham County as a Paramedic Tactical Medic for several years before joining Regional One. He had recently received national recognition for his flight paramedic certification. David worked part-time, alongside his wife with Greenville County Emergency Medical Services. "JR," as he was called, was known for his love of patient care. "He was an outstanding role model, and was a great asset to our team," stated Boystak.

The "Best of the Best Paramedic Award" was named for David Bacon. It is presented to one student in each graduating paramedic class. We will always remember JR here; he is worthy of remembrance.

Honored 2005
