Biography
Darlene's desire to help others developed while she was in high school when she decided to become a nurse. After graduation she worked at Louise Obici Memorial Hospital in Suffolk and enrolled in the nursing program at Thomas Nelson Community College.

As a cardiac technician, Darlene had worked with the Newport News Emergency Medical Services Bureau for three years and represented the city with professionalism and compassion. The Northampton Rescue Squad benefited from these same qualities for 13 years.

One August 27, 1990, Darlene collapsed from a massive cerebral hemorrhage while on duty at Fire Station #9. She died 34 days later on September 30, at the Medical College of Virginia. Darlene's body was transported from North Riverside Baptist Church to the cemetery in the Medic 9 ambulance that had taken her on so many emergency calls to help others. Her boots, helmet, and protective clothing were fastened to the ambulance's bumper. Newport News and Hampton firefighters and officers wore black bands over their badges and fire station flags were flown at half mast in her honor.

Darlene was 35, but her legacy continues in the many students at Tidewater Regional Training Academy she prepared for emergency medical technician certification.

Darlene is remembered as a dedicated wife to her husband Tom and devoted mother to her children Brian and Lisa.

Honored 1995
