Biography
William graduated from New Berlin High School and attended Hartwick College and Tompkins Cortland Community College. Like many people in EMS, he was very deeply rooted in his community and belonged to many other emergency organizations, including the New Berlin Volunteer Fire Department. He took his job seriously and decided to become an Advanced Emergency Medical Technician level 3, one of the highest levels of care provider in New York State at the time. Ithaca College, New York State Park Police ? Finger Lakes Region, and Bangs Ambulance recognized Chapin for his work.

On March 15, 1986 while off duty, William was called in to assist with a rescue at the Buttermilk Falls State Park. Patrons of the park had been swept away by high water into the Buttermilk Falls Gorge. While attempting to execute a swift water rescue, William Chapin was himself swept into the high waters and drowned as he was pulling victims to safety.

Honored 2011
